DBF format has been replaced with CSV format. There are two folders, one for national and one for Puerto Rico. ==================== FARS Auxiliary Files -------------------- The FARS Auxiliary files are datasets that are derived from the standard FARS datasets: 1. Accident -> Acc_Aux 2. Vehicle -> Veh_Aux 3. Person -> Per_Aux These files are joined by the standard key variables. These data are intended for countermeasure research and development. However, NHTSA’s National Center for Statistics and Analysis (NCSA) quality control team has identified inconsistencies between the new non-motorist data elements and comparable pre-existing FARS elements that can lead to different results. Consequently, NHTSA has removed the pbtype table from the 2010 and 2011 FARS and NASS GES files while research is conducted on how improvements can be made. This pbtype table includes some non-motorist data (see below). The following data elements have been removed: PB30 – Crash Type - Pedestrian PB31 – Crash Type Location - Pedestrian PB32 – Pedestrian Position PB33 – Pedestrian Initial Direction of Travel PB34 – Motorist Direction PB35 – Motorist Maneuver PB36 – Intersection Leg PB37 – Pedestrian Scenario PB38 – Crash Group – Pedestrian PB30B – Crash Type - Bicycle PB31B – Crash Location - Bicycle PB32B – Bicyclist Position PB33B – Bicyclist Direction PB38B – Crash Group - Bicyclist 01/27/2012: Accident We have identified a problem in calculating the Latitude and Longitude data field in decimal format and this has been corrected. The problem is a conversion calculation of Latitude and Longitude data from Degrees/Minutes/Seconds. 02/03/2012: VEVENT and VSOE Added to a new column called VEVENTNUM to the VEVENT Table. This variable provides the event number for a vehicle. VSOE is a new table that is created. Please refer to the documentation for detailed information. 9/22/2017: Derived Indian Reservation data elements have been added to the Accident level auxiliary file – ACC_AUX.*. The first data year of availability for the following new Indian Reservation related data elements is 2001: BIA – 1 indicates that the crash occurred on Tribal lands. The geographic location data collected in FARS was used in conjunction with spatial data on the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) land boundaries to identify Tribal lands. SPJ_INDIAN – derived from FARS special jurisdiction (SP_JUR=3) element. 1 indicates that the crash occurred on an Indian Reservation. *INDIAN_RES – 1 indicates either BIA=1 or SPJ_INDIAN=1. This provides a more accurate representation of fatal crashes occurring on Tribal lands. *Use the INDIAN_RES data element to obtain the most complete data. ACC_AUX.* datasets can be merged with other FARS datasets by ST_CASE to obtain additional information on the crash. 03/02/2022: 1. PER_AUX, VEH_AUX and ACC_AUX files are updated 2. Starting from this file release, the FARS file directory structure has been changed beginning 1982. Auxiliary files are zipped separately from the rest of the FARS files. For each year, there are two folders, one for national and one for Puerto Rico. In each folder, there are four zip files - one zip file for Auxiliary SAS files - one zip file for Auxiliary CSV files - one zip file for non-Auxiliary SAS files - one zip file for non-Auxiliary CSV files 04/03/2023: Added vPICDecode CSV and SAS files. The vPICDecode files are created using NHTSA's vPIC tool and contain the vPIC decode results for cleanly decoded VINs.
